The Global Peace Operations Program (GPOP) has been established as Canada's contribution to the G8 global peace operations initiative to enhance global capacity for peace operations with a focus on Africa. Although the majority of projects take place in Africa, GPOP also works in other areas, such as the Americas.
Recognising that there is a global need for complex peace support operations and that there are significant gaps in the ability of some states to conduct such operations in a timely manner, the G8 partners have committed to an Action Plan for Expanding Global Capability for Peace Operations. The G8 initiative dates from the 2004 G8 Sea Island Summit and has been re-affirmed and given further definition by the Prime Minister and his G8 colleagues at the 2006 St Petersburg, 2007 Heiligendamm, 2008 Toyako and 2009 L'Aquila Summits.
