How We Respond to Conflict and Crisis Abroad

START leads the development and promotion of Canadian foreign policy related to fragile and conflict-affected situations internationally. While working across, as well as with civil society organizations, academics and others, START leads in formulating Canadian policy on conflict related issues.

Programming

The Stabilization and Reconstruction Taskforce (START) delivers programming which is closely aligned with Canada’s international peace and security interests. START programming also reflects Canadian values such as, freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law. Programming is funded by the Global Peace and Security Fund.

Deployment of Expertise

The Government of Canada through START helps build civilian capacity in affected situations through the deployment of Canadian Civilian Experts. Ultimately the deployment of expertize supports affected states in their efforts to effectively and peacefully manage their own crises.

Coordination

Canada needs to be able to respond quickly and effectively to natural disasters, complex emergencies, and outbreaks of violent conflict. The Government of Canada response to these situations abroad is strengthened by START’s work:
