Training Peruvian Political Parties to Reflect Citizens Needs

In 2010-2011, Canada provided support to the Peruvian nonprofit organization Asociación Civil Transparencia organization, founded in 1994 by a group of citizens with no political affiliation. The organization's main objective is to consolidate democracy in Peru through a network of local volunteer committees that extends across the country. Canada's support has included training and technical assistance to all major Peruvian political parties for the regional elections, presidential and legislative elections in 2010 and 2011. Transparencia allowed beneficiaries to establish strong political programs, to better define their work plans and, more importantly, to better reflect the needs and demands of all citizens.

At the end of the project, the five participating parties had developed guidelines for governance and government had submitted its plan for 2011-2016. Two of these parties competed in the final round of the presidential election, namely the Fuerza 2011 party Keiko Fujimori and Ollanta Humala of Gana Perú. Humala has since become the president of Peru.
