Supporting free and fair elections through the OAS

Electoral station in Haiti

Since January 2009, Canada has supported fair and transparent elections in 16 countries of the region by contributing to 27 electoral observation missions through the Organization of American States (OAS).  The observation missions build stronger, more efficient and transparent electoral processes, thereby increasing voter confidence in the democratic processes of their country.

From 2009 to 2011 the electoral observation missions have helped  in 16 countries of the region, namely: Antigua & Barbuda, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname.  Several of these missions included Canadian participants (including from Elections Canada).

This support comes in addition to Canada’s contribution to other conflict-resolution and governance-strengthening initiatives throughout the hemisphere, in areas such as public sector development, democratization support, rule of law strengthening and human rights promotion.
