Canadian volunteers in the Americas

In 2012, 400 skilled Canadian volunteers undertook placements with developing country partners in Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Peru. In addition, 223 youth, including 31 Aboriginal youth, participated in short-term internships in the Americas.

childrenThese DFATD-supported volunteer and internship programs engage Canadians in effective development activities overseas, strengthen relations between Canadians and citizens in the Americas, and raise awareness of international development issues in Canada. Canadian volunteers and interns return to Canada with a deeper understanding of Canada’s place in the world.

For more information about these placements, please visit the website of the new Global Citizens Program. The program aims to engage and mobilize Canadians as global citizens to participate in international development initiatives in three significant areas: public awareness, education and knowledge, and youth participation.
