APEC Summit 2010
Japan concluded its year as host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) with the APEC Ministerial Meeting and the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which took place in Yokohama on November 13 and 14, 2010. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon and Minister of International Trade Peter Van Loan participated in the meetings along with leaders and ministers from other APEC economies.
2010 marked an important milestone for APEC, as it was the target year for the region’s industrialized countries to achieve the “Bogor Goals” of free and open trade and investment. The Bogor Goals, adopted in Indonesia in 1994, commit APEC’s industrialized economies to achieving this goal of free and open trade and investment no later than 2010, and developing economies no later than 2020. APEC 2010 also looked at the development of an APEC growth strategy, at ways to enhance regional economic integration and at continuing to improve human security, including food security, in the region.
