United Nations Disarmament Machinery
General and complete disarmament has been one of the UN’s main goals since its creation in 1945. The primary focus of the UN’s disarmament activities has been on the most destructive weapons known to humanity: nuclear weapons. Multilateral disarmament forums were established and have evolved over the decades to work towards the goal of nuclear disarmament. The landmark agreement made in the Final Document of the 1978 Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Disarmament, among other things, created the three main UN organs for disarmament activities that continue to meet today.
