Pitch Perfect with the TCS

Laura Jo Gunter: I’m Laura Jo Gunter and I’m the CEO/producer of Condition30. Condition30 has developed procedural music engine which means that the music is developed with an algorithm in the computer. So we actually compose and produce music within the computer using this algorithm.

Michael Mancini:  I know that you've used the Trade Commissioner Service.

Laura Jo Gunter: Yes.

Michael Mancini: Tell me how you’ve used them.

Laura Jo Gunter: For the company we used them in a couple of ways. We went to the prep camp before we came to GDC. So that was really, really useful. So we went through a lot of things, everything from meeting the press, which we hadn’t done a lot of, and still are hoping to do. The pitching which was a good, I had done some pitching but it was a good reminder because there are a lot of things that you should be doing that as time goes on you forget that you should be doing and it’s a great reminder. The networking was really, really good in terms of getting to meet some other people, especially people in Montreal. It’s amazing how people in Toronto just don’t know their counterparts in Montreal. So that was really good, in fact we had a really good meeting today with another company in Montreal and really fingers crossed that we can actually do some things together. But the biggest thing they did was especially the Trade Commissioner in Finland hooked us up with Sulake and they’re best known for Habbo Hotel, they have the same audience base that we’re looking for, same sort of model. And we actually managed to get a meeting with them. So we were really excited. Well I think having a trade commissioner lend small companies like myself some legitimacy. I mean I can be just a crazed Canadian woman trying to get into Finland, like hi, come and talk to me. I mean everybody is going to say I have a great idea, you should come and talk to us now that you’re successful. So by having the Trade Commissioner it gives you that sense that the government has vetted you and that you’re a sane person with a real product. And that you’re actually worth talking to. It’s trying to get time with these bigger companies that can help you in terms of growing your product, your audience in our case, that’s huge. And we could be spending hours and hours and we don’t have the ability to fly to Finland and spend days and days trying to meet with these people. So it’s really important to have some people on the ground that really know those countries and are able to guide you through them.
