Background

The Fundamentals of Intercultural Effectiveness is designed to support your transition to living and working effectively in another country, where you will be interacting with people from cultures other than your own. The course is also beneficial to persons working in any multicultural environment.

Approach

This self-directed web-based course is founded on our Pre-Departure in Intercultural Effectiveness course and consists of an introduction and four modules which can be completed in approximately three hours. A virtual cultural guide takes you along a journey of interactive, media-rich activities and helps you complete your intercultural passport.

Objectives

Course participants will enhance their knowledge in the following areas:

  • an understanding of how one's culture influences one's own values, beliefs and actions;
  • an understanding of the concept of culture;
  • intercultural communication;
  • an understanding of the core intercultural competencies required to effectively live and work in another culture

Who Should Register

All professionals and volunteers working on short and long term international assignments. The course is also beneficial to individuals and organizations working in multicultural environments domestically.

Availability, Duration and Technical Requirements

Available on the Internet, the 3-hour course is offered in both low-bandwidth and hi-bandwidth versions.

The course is compatible with Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) and Netscape Navigator 6 (or higher) and requires a working internet connection (high speed recommended).
