Ministerial Visit Summary

Minister Day travelled to Lima, Peru, from November 19 to 23, 2008, where he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting and took part in events on the margins of the meeting.

While at the APEC Ministerial Meeting, Minister Day:

• participated in the Ministerial Meeting plenary sessions;
• attended a breakfast for trade ministers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Singapore, hosted by the U.S. Trade Representative; and
• participated in the APEC Ministerial Meeting press conference.

He also met with several of his counterparts on a number of bilateral and multilateral issues:

• the U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Susan Schwab, ;
• Australia's Minister for Trade, Simon Crean;
• Peru’s Minister of Trade and Tourism, Mercedes Aráoz;
• Mexico's Secretary of the Economy, Gerardo Ruiz Mateos;
• the Republic of Korea's Minister of International Trade for the Republic of Korea, Kim Jong-hoon;
• New Zealand's Minister of International Trade, Tim Groser; and
• China's Minister of International Trade, Chen Deming.

During these meetings, he reiterated the importance of bilateral cooperation, as well as open trade and investment. While meeting with his Peruvian counterpart, Trade and Tourism Minister Mercedes Aráoz, he discussed next steps for the Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement, as well as other issues such as corporate social responsibility.

In addition, Minister Day spoke at a networking event with Canadian chief executives, hosted by the Embassy of Canada in Lima, and met with members of Junior Team Canada.
