Minister Day visits Japan and China

Today, Minister Day concluded a 10-day trade mission aimed at generating business for Canada in Japan and in China.

While in Hong Kong, the minister discussed the global credit crisis with Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau, and met with two Canadian trade delegations.

The minister launched two new Canadian trade offices in Chengdu and Shenzhen, China. He also unveiled Canadian reconstruction plans for a new senior citizens’ residence to house survivors of the Sichuan earthquake, which killed more than 70,000 Chinese people nearly a year ago.

In Beijing, Minister Day announced the signing of seven construction contracts between Canadian and Chinese companies and the launch of six new research initiatives in science and technology.

During his trip to Japan, he and his Japanese counterpart, Toshihiro Nikai, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, agreed to work towards a future economic partnership agreement. The two ministers also reached an agreement to expand the existing bilateral air transport agreement between the two countries.
