Message to On-Line Customs Brokers - 08 November 2010

Elimination Of Permit Fees Related To The Importation Of Item 80 – Carbon Steel And Item 81 – Specialty Steel Of The Import Control List

The purpose of this notice is to inform you that effective November 9, 2010, further to the Ministerial Order, amending the Export and Import Permits and Certificates Fees Order, the Trade Controls and Technical Barriers Bureau will no longer collect fees on permits related to the importation of Item 80 – Carbon Steel and Item 81 – Specialty Steel of the Import Control List. The carbon steel and specialty steel products subject to this measure can be found in the Steel Commodity Listing (*PDF 251 kb).

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Finance Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency are working toward reducing the regulatory burden at the border through the implementation of a new Canada Border Services Agency information sharing system, Pathfinder, to access import data which is currently only available through the import permit system under the Export and Import Permits Act.  As an interim measure, pending the full implementation of Pathfinder, the Trade Controls and Technical Barriers Bureau is eliminating the fees on steel permits as a cost saving measure for the industry.
