Dear Jack [Hickerson], There are times when 1 despair of the future, especially when I read the following in the Congressional Record from Senator Ellender of Louisiana: "This Nation owes that much more money than does the British Empire. In other words, our national debt today is over twice as much as that of Great Britain and all her possessions. Included in her possessions are, of course, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and British South Africa." If Senator Ellender knows so little about Canada, it might be desirable to invite him to come around and see us sometime at the Embassy when we will do our best to convince him that we are the possession of nobody but our people, our government, and the Soviet Military Attache! Yours sincerely, | |
