Multilateral Environmental Agreements
As an active participant in a host of multilateral environmental agreements including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations Forum on Forests and the Montreal Protocol, Canada is an important contributor to international policy development.
Canada is a party to many international environmental agreements and arrangements. The website of Canada Treaty Information is searchable database provides users with basic information about some of them, including brief summaries of the commitments they contain.
Multilateral Environmental Agreements Section
The role of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements Section (GDE) in the department is to work to develop policy and provide advice on topics including biological diversity, chemicals and hazardous materials, forests, water and other environmental issues. To achieve progress in these areas GDE participates in a number of environmental forums, works with major international environmental organizations and other governmental departments. The section also recommends and oversees funding where appropriate.
