President’s Biography

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was elected President of Argentina in October 2007. She is Argentina’s first elected female President.

President Kirchner has a Law degree from the National University of La Plata. After practicing law for several years, President Kirchner served in the Santa Cruz Provincial Legislature between 1989 and 1995.

Between 1995 and 1997, she held the position of Senator representing the Province of Santa Cruz. For the next four years she was a member of the Argentine Chamber of Deputies. From 2001 to 2005, she was again elected member of the Argentine Senate for the Province of Santa Cruz.

Prior to being elected to her current position, President Kirchner served as a Senator for the Province of Buenos Aires and as Chairwoman of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the Honourable Senate of the Nation.
