Ambassador Golberg Nominated to Second Vice Chairperson of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) Executive Committee

On Friday, October 3, Ambassador Elissa Golberg took over the position of Second Vice Chairperson on the Executive Committee Bureau of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Nominated by Colombia, Ethiopia, and Somalia, each of these three countries expressed its support for the election of such a qualified Canadian to join the committee.

The Executive Committee governs the programs and budget of UNHCR and provides direction and guidance on the work of the High Commissioner. UNHCR is a key partner for the Government of Canada. It plays an essential role in providing protection and solutions for the world’s refugees, internally displaced and stateless persons. Canada provides valuable diplomatic, financial and solutions support for UNHCR. Canada is among the UNHCR’s top ten donors and the top three resettlement countries globally.

The High Commissioner of UNHCR Antonio Guterres warmly welcomed Ambassador Golberg to the Executive Committee Bureau. He stated that “indeed, the fact that Ambassador Golberg is joining the Executive Committee Bureau is good news… You have helped us, not only through general contributions of Canada – a remarkable country of asylum – but also through demanding excellence of us.”
