John Gero
Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO)

Hon. John Gero

Mr. John Gero is an economist who joined the Canadian Government in 1975 and has worked on international aid and trade issues. He served at Canadian Missions in Nairobi and Geneva. He has been the Canadian GATT and NAFTA negotiator on intellectual property. Mr.Gero has been in charge of divisions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade dealing with international intellectual property issues, general market access concerns and trade remedies.

Between 1996 and 2000, Mr. Gero was Director General of the Trade Policy Bureau responsible for the trade policy aspects of investment, competition policy, government procurement, services and intellectual property issues. Between 2000-2003, Mr. Gero was the Assistant Deputy Minister for International Business and Chief Trade Commissioner. In this position, he was responsible for Canada's international business development program and the hundreds of Canadian trade commissioners in Canada and abroad.

Until 2008, he was Assistant Deputy Minister for Trade Policy and Negotiations and Chief Negotiator for the World Trade Organization. Mr. Gero's current position is Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the World Trade Organization.
