On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Haiti, close to Port-au-Prince.
That quake caused widespread devastation and loss of life. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians and foreign nationals died or were injured in the quake's aftermath.
First response
Within hours of the earthquake, the Government of Canada had deployed civilian and military emergency management experts to Haiti, began what would become a significant humanitarian response.

Long term support
Canada is committed to supporting Haiti for the long term.
Care and maintenance of the displaced population as well as recovery and reconstruction efforts, will take years.
Canada will stand by the Government of Haiti and the Haitian population to build a better Haiti.

Assistance for Canadians in Haiti
Canadians seeking emergency consular assistance in the area should contact the Emergency Operations Centre or call 613-996-8885 collect.
The Operations Centre of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Canadians who are able to make their way to the Dominican Republic by their own means can get assistance at the Embassy of Canada in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area should contact Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada at 1-800-387-3124.
