July 3 to 14, 2009
Ottawa, Toronto, Victoria and Vancouver, Canada
Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan visited Canada from July 3 to 14, 2009. During their visit they had the opportunity to meet many Canadians, including representatives of the Japanese-Canadian community.
This was His Majesty's first visit to Canada since he visited as Crown Prince in 1953, touring several Canadian cities en route to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Canada’s first diplomatic mission in Japan. On July 8, 2009, Canada Post marked this anniversary with a commemorative envelope. On July 22, 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint is also launching a special sterling silver coin produced in collaboration with the Japan Mint.
