Digital Media
Canada has quickly evolved into a hotbed of digital-media innovation.
“ Canada is punching far above its weight in the video game category. There are 13,000 video-game development jobs in Canada. In California (...) headquarters for most of these publishers and the entertainment capital of the world, there are only 12,000. ”
Brian Ward, Senior Vice-President, Worldwide Studios Activision Publishing
Canada has grown into the world’s third-largest developer of video games, thanks to a strong base of highly creative independent firms, generous tax credits, and sophisticated, flexible education and training infrastructure.
- Canada’s interactive-media sector employs more than 52,000 people and generates annual revenues of $3.8 billion.
- Between 2003 and 2011 Canada was the world’s leading location for foreign direct investment in video games. During this period, nearly 100 foreign companies greenfield projects in Canada’s creative industries.
- Canada is a major player in this global industry, in terms of both size and the quality of talent and resources. In the past two years, the country’s video-gaming industry has grown by 11 percent annually and generated $1.7 billion in revenues in 2011. Annual growth rates of 17 percent are expected for each of the next two years.
- Between 2003 and 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted more than 1,000 multimedia-related patents (including 323 related to video gaming) to inventors based in Canada.
- With its long experience in simulation and training technologies, Canada’s ICT industry is well placed to benefit from gamification: a technique that engages audiences in problem-solving processes.
