(No. A/82 - May 10, 2010) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands to Ottawa on May 11, 2010, to celebrate Canada’s close historical and contemporary relationship with the Netherlands.
On the occasion of Princess Margriet’s official visit to Canada, Minister Cannon will accompany Her Royal Highness as they view a collection of documents, publications and photographs highlighting both the historic ties between Canada and the Netherlands, including Her Royal Highness’s birth in Ottawa in 1943, and the continued cooperation between the two countries. The exhibition was prepared by Library and Archives Canada to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, in which Canada played a key role.
The exhibition will showcase several historical books, including a commemorative photo album that was presented to Prime Minister Mackenzie King in 1947, a book entitled You Were Not There: Occupation and Liberation that tells the story of Canadian soldiers involved in the liberation of the Netherlands, and publications describing the liberation of Amsterdam.
