(No. 307 - October 16, 2009 - 2 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will visit the Maghreb and the Middle East from October 19 to 25, 2009, to meet with leaders and ministers of Libya, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
"I look forward to meeting with my counterparts, senior officials and important stakeholders to reinforce Canada’s good relations with these countries and to explore opportunities to expand those relations," said Minister Cannon. "Together, we will review bilateral issues and discuss major regional issues of common interest such as Iran, Afghanistan and the Middle East peace process."
On October 20 and 21, Minister Cannon will participate in the second annual Israeli Presidential Conference,"Facing Tomorrow." The conference, established in 2008 by Israel’s President Shimon Peres, brings together leading international figures to discuss a range of topics facing the state of Israel, the Jewish people and the international community.
Canada’s contribution at the conference will allow it to highlight the 60th anniversary of Israel-Canada relations, and to reiterate Canadian support for sustainable peace and security in the region.
"I will also promote Canadian business investments and meet with Canadian business people in the region," said Minister Cannon. "Our business communities abroad are often the pillars of our relations with other countries, and we are proud of the work that they do."
