Statement by Minister Cannon on Zimbabwe

(No. 308 - October 16, 2009 - 4:45 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the political situation in Zimbabwe:

"I am concerned by recent events in Zimbabwe. Reports of ongoing politically motivated persecutions, including the rearrest of Roy Bennett—the Movement for Democratic Change’s nominee for deputy minister for agriculture in the inclusive government—are deeply troubling. Canada reiterates its call for Zimbabwean authorities to respect human rights and the rule of law.

"Canada also calls for the immediate and full implementation of the Global Political Agreement, and encourages regional leaders to use their influence to help resolve the continuing political crisis in Zimbabwe."
