Canada Regrets Fiji’s Expulsion of Diplomats

(No. 330 – November 5, 2009 – 1:50 p.m. EST) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on Fiji’s expulsion of Australia’s High Commissioner and New Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner:

"Canada regrets the decision by the Fijian regime to expel the High Commissioner of Australia and the Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand. The grounds for these expulsions do not stand up to scrutiny. Cutting off these crucial diplomatic ties will only isolate Fiji further from its regional neighbours and the larger international community.

"Canada supports freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. We call on the Fijian regime to restore the democratic rights of the Fijian people by taking immediate steps to restore the constitution, reinstate the judiciary and hold early elections."
