Minister Cannon to Visit Republic of Korea and Attend APEC Ministers Meeting

(No. 333 - November 6, 2009 - 7:30 p.m. EST) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will visit the Republic of Korea from November 8 to 10, 2009, and attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting in Singapore on November 11 and 12.

"I look forward to my first official visit to South Korea," said Minister Cannon. "This country is a very important partner for Canada, and we have an unprecedented opportunity to elevate that relationship, particularly as we prepare for the G20 Summit that Canada will host and co-chair with South Korea in June."

Following this visit, Minister Cannon will attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting in Singapore. At the Meeting, the Minister will hold senior-level meetings to discuss ways to continue promoting economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Throughout his trip to the region, the Minister will take part in a number of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening Canada’s relations with some of its closest partners in Asia. While in South Korea, Minister Cannon will pay a courtesy call on President Lee Myung-bak and meet with Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan, Minister of Unification Hyun In-taek and several parliamentarians.
