Canada Welcomes UN Resolution on International Nelson Mandela Day
(No. 338 - November 10, 2009 - 1 p.m. EST) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the adoption of the United Nations resolution on an International Nelson Mandela Day:
"Canada welcomes the adoption of the resolution on an International Nelson Mandela Day. This day will remind us of the importance of fighting injustice, upholding freedom and democracy, and promoting a culture of peace throughout the world.
"Nelson Mandela truly exemplifies commitment to a people, moral fortitude and service to humanity. He has also shown us how it is possible to be both a leading statesman and an exceptional human being. His work on conflict resolution and the protection of children’s rights only adds to his legacy.
"Nelson Mandela, who has also been made a Companion of the Order of Canada and an honorary Canadian citizen, is an inspiration to us all."
