Canada Concerned About Political Violence in Madagascar

(No. 25 - January 30, 2009)The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today commented on the situation in Madagascar.

"Canada is concerned about the reported deaths, violence and destruction associated with recent political demonstrations and unrest in Madagascar," said the Minister. "We urge all parties to exercise restraint, and we call on political leaders to engage in dialogue to find political solutions that respect the country's Constitution and the rule of law."

The High Commission of Canada in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with Canada's Honorary Consul and other officials in Madagascar, is monitoring the situation closely, and recommends against non-essential travel to the country.
