(No. 45 - February 20, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will be in Washington, D.C., on February 24 to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"When Prime Minister Harper and President Obama met yesterday in Ottawa, they agreed on the importance of Canada and the U.S. working closely on a number of key international priorities," said Minister Cannon. "Secretary Clinton and I are following up immediately to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two countries on key international challenges."
Minister Cannon and Secretary Clinton will focus their discussions on the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit and Afghanistan. They will also discuss cooperation in the Americas, including the promotion of effective discussion and meaningful results at the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago.
This will be Minister Cannon's first official meeting with Secretary Clinton.
"Canada and the U.S. have a long and successful history of cooperation on global issues. We share the same values—respect for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law," added Minister Cannon. "We look forward to working with the new administration as it renews its engagement with international partners."
