(No. 55 - March 2, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will be in Brussels from March 4 to 5, 2009, where he will attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.
"I look forward to meeting with my NATO counterparts and discussing with them our common interests and shared security concerns," said Minister Cannon. "Canada is strongly committed to NATO and views this 26-country alliance as the primary forum for security consultation between Europe and North America."
The meeting will consist of a session of the North Atlantic Council at the level of foreign ministers. In preparation for NATO's 60th anniversary summit, which will take place in Strasbourg, France, and Kehl, Germany, from April 3 to 4, 2009, ministers will discuss issues such as NATO's role in Afghanistan and relationship with Russia.
The Minister will also attend a working dinner of NATO and European Union foreign ministers on March 4.
