(No. 62 - March 8, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement condemning yesterday's murder of two members of the British Army in Northern Ireland:
"I am shocked by these actions of a small number of people, who want to turn back the clock on progress in establishing a lasting peace in Northern Ireland. Canada condemns these cowardly murders in the strongest terms possible.
"Canada expresses its sympathy to the families of the slain soldiers.
"The Government of Canada remains steadfast in supporting the efforts of the U.K. and Irish governments, and of the political parties in Northern Ireland, to cement the gains of the peace process."
Canada has consistently supported the Northern Ireland peace process. Many Canadians, notably former General John de Chastelain, have played important roles in the process since 1994. As well, the Government of Canada has contributed to the International Fund for Ireland since it was founded in 1986 to bring together communities in Ireland.
