Canada Offers Condolences to Italy Following L'Aquila Earthquake

(No. 91 - April 6, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today offered Canada's condolences to the people of Italy, following the tragic loss of life caused by the earthquake that struck the province of L'Aquila early this morning.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the devastation and loss of life caused by today's earthquake," said Minister Cannon. "On behalf of the government and people of Canada, I extend our sincerest sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy."

There are no reports to date of Canadian fatalities or injuries as a result of the earthquake.

Canadians in Italy in need of consular assistance should contact the Canadian Embassy in Rome or Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada collect at 613-996-8885.

Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area should contact Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada at 1-800-387-3124; those in Ottawa should dial 613-996-8885.
