Canada Congratulates Lebanon on Successful Elections

(No. 153 - June 8, 2009)The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement congratulating the people of Lebanon on their June 7, 2009, parliamentary elections:

“Canada congratulates the Lebanese people for the peaceful, orderly manner in which the country’s 2009 parliamentary elections were conducted. We also congratulate Sa’ad Hariri and the members of the 14 March coalition on their victory

“Canada recognized the importance of these elections by sending observers, providing electoral support and working with civil society organizations on voter education and access.

“Canada and Lebanon have a strong bilateral relationship and share a vision of peace and security in Lebanon and throughout the region. We hope that the Lebanese people will remain patient during the post-election process and support their democratically elected members as the nation faces the challenges in ensuring stability, security and the implementation of all pertinent UN resolutions.”
