Statement by Minister Cannon on Situation in Niger

(No. 188 - July 3, 3009 ) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the situation in Niger:

“Canada strongly deplores the recent decisions made by the President of Niger, Mamadou Tandja, including those to invoke Article 53 of Niger’s Constitution and to rule by decree, without any justification.

“On May 30, 2009, Canada urged officials of Niger to respect the spirit and the letter of Constitution. However, the new measures compromise the democratic advances of recent years and greatly threaten the country’s social fabric.

“Canada continues to call on Niger’s officials to fulfill their responsibilities and govern in a manner that respects the spirit and the letter of the Constitution.”
