Canada Condemns Terrorist Attacks in Jakarta

(No. 198 - July 17, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement condemning the attacks on hotels in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Friday:

“Canada condemns the shameful and cowardly attacks on two hotels in Jakarta, which have killed and injured scores of civilians.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of those killed in the attacks, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. The Government of Canada stands steadfast with the people and Government of Indonesia.

“Parliamentary Secretary Deepak Obhrai, who was visiting Indonesia, and Ambassador John Holmes today visited two Canadians injured in the blasts. The two are recovering at separate Jakarta hospitals.

“The Parliamentary Secretary also met with Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, to personally convey Canada’s condolences.

“Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada in Ottawa and the Embassy in Jakarta are closely monitoring the aftermath of the blasts. Canadian consular officials continue to provide consular assistance as required.”
