Statement by Minister Cannon on Niger Referendum

(No. 220 - August 11, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the referendum in Niger:

"Canada notes the results of the August 4 constitutional referendum held by the authorities of Niger in contravention of the provisions of the country’s 1999 Constitution. Canada is concerned at this setback, which compromises the democratic progress made by Niger over the past 10 years.

"The authorities of Niger have ignored the protests of the country’s people, the decisions of its legitimate democratic institutions and the grave concerns expressed by the international community, including Canada’s two previous calls to the authorities to act responsibly.

"As a result of this situation, Canada is obliged to reconsider the terms of its relations with the authorities of Niger."
