Minister Cannon Condemns Bombings in Iraq

(No. 225 - August 20, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the terrorist bombings yesterday in Baghdad, which killed more than 95 people and wounded more than 500:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to express my deepest condolences to families and friends of those killed in yesterday’s bombings in Baghdad, and my wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured.

"Canada strongly condemns these senseless and shameful acts of violence.

"The Government of Canada firmly supports the people and the government of Iraq in their efforts to bring about a secure, stable, unified and democratic country. Canada continues to support freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Iraq."
