Minister Cannon to Attend Friends of Democratic Pakistan Meeting in Istanbul and Visit Egypt

(No. 227 - August 22, 2009) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will attend a meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan in Istanbul, Turkey, from August 24 to 25 before travelling on to visit Egypt from August 26 to 27.

"The Friends of Democratic Pakistan is an important forum to address security and development challenges facing Pakistan," said Minister Cannon. "We welcome the opportunity to discuss with the Government of Pakistan and other partners how best to support efforts to improve socio-economic development and stability in Pakistan."

More than two million people have been displaced since May as a result of Pakistan’s military campaign against the Taliban in the North West Frontier Province.

During her visit to Pakistan earlier this month, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced an additional $25 million to provide humanitarian aid for Pakistan’s internally displaced persons. The announcement brought Canada’s total contribution to address humanitarian needs in Pakistan to $33 million since fall 2008.

Following his visit to Turkey, Minister Cannon will travel to Cairo for a series of meetings, including comprehensive bilateral consultations with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit. Egypt plays a central role in efforts to establish long-term peace in the Middle East and is an important partner for Canada in the region.
