(No. 259 - September 17, 2009 - 11:50 a.m. EDT) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will meet with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé in Ottawa on Friday, September 18.
"This is a key moment to meet with a very important European partner,” said Minister Cannon. “Relations between our two countries are very strong, and I look forward to 2010 as a year of increased collaboration, with Spain taking over the presidency of the European Council in January, and Canada hosting the G8 Summit in June."
The ministers will discuss the most recent bilateral developments, as well as a number of international issues of direct interest to the two countries. Chief among these are Canada-European Union relations, including the important trade negotiations on a comprehensive and economic trade agreement.
"I look forward to a productive exchange regarding our respective priorities for the year to come,” added Minister Cannon. “We will continue to work with Spain not only to deepen our bilateral relations, but also to further strengthen our relationship with the EU and ensure a successful Canada-EU Summit in 2010."
During his visit, Minister Moratinos will also meet with the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), to discuss issues of common interest relating to the Americas. In addition, Minister Moratinos will lead a roundtable at the University of Ottawa on “Spain, the European Union and Canada.”
