Ministers Cannon and Day Meet with New Zealand’s Foreign Minister

(No. 293 - October 5, 2009 - 5 p.m. EDT) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today met with Murray McCully, New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Ottawa.

“New Zealand is a long-standing friend and steadfast ally of Canada,” said Minister Cannon. “Our two countries enjoy a history of close links and a unique partnership on international issues. I am pleased to have had this opportunity to meet with Minister McCully to discuss key bilateral, regional and global issues.”

“The Asia-Pacific region is a priority for Canada. We have strong ties across the Pacific, and the economic opportunities there are vast,” said Minister Day. “Minister McCully and I discussed how free and open markets could be strengthened through the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement, a promising platform for regional integration in Asia-Pacific.”

Minister McCully also met with the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, the Honourable Bev Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, and the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas).
