Canada Condemns Attack in Pakistan

(No. 1 – January 2, 2010 – 4 p.m. EST) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement condemning the bombing that killed 93 villagers attending a volleyball game in northwest Pakistan on January 1.

"Canada strongly condemns this cowardly attack on the people of Pakistan. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. That many of the victims were innocent civilians enjoying a sporting event makes this attack even more contemptible.

"We continue to work with the Government of Pakistan in the fight against violent extremist groups.

"Canada is committed to promoting freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law."
