Canada Condemns Nigerian Violence and Calls For Reconciliation
(No. 38 – January 23, 2010 – 11:15 a.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the outbreak of violence in the Nigerian city of Jos:
"Canada condemns the outbreak of violence in Jos in the strongest terms and welcomes the return of calm following the arrival of additional security forces.
"On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those killed in the violence, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.
"Canada calls on the Government of Nigeria to bring to justice all those responsible for this violence, in accordance with Nigerian and international law.
"We encourage the Government of Nigeria to continue striving to address the root causes of this recurring violence, and for Nigerian communities to continue working together to build a peaceful society."
