(No. 82 - February 26, 2010 – 11:30 a.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Senator Raynell Andreychuk will lead the Canadian delegation to the inauguration of José Mujica as president of Uruguay, which is to take place in Montevideo on March 1, 2010.

“Senator Andreychuk’s participation in the inauguration will reflect the importance of Canada’s bilateral relationship with Uruguay,” said Minister Cannon. “This relationship is built upon shared values and objectives on a range of hemispheric and global issues, including peacekeeping operations, international human rights, cooperation in Haiti and other multilateral initiatives.

“The Senator’s presence at this important event also highlights Canada’s support for a more prosperous, democratic and secure hemisphere that brings increasing opportunities to its citizens.”

Senator Andreychuk will take this opportunity to visit El Proyecto Renacer (the Rebirth Project), an initiative supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives. The project focuses on rehabilitation programs in support of drug-dependent youth and their families.
