(No. 95 - March 8, 2010 - 8:00 p.m. ET) The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today announced that he will attend the inauguration of Sebastián Piñera as President of Chile. The inauguration will take place in Valparaíso on March 11, 2010.
“Canada and Chile have worked alongside each other for many years as partners with common aspirations and objectives for the hemisphere,” said Minister of State Kent. “Our presence at the inauguration ceremony not only highlights this long-standing relationship but also signals our continued solidarity with Chile in the aftermath of the recent earthquake.
“The Government of Canada looks forward to deepening its already strong relationship with the Government of Chile and working together with Mr. Piñera and his team to promote our common goals in the region of prosperity, democratic governance and security.
“The Government of Canada announced last week that it will provide up to $2 million for urgent humanitarian assistance in response to a request from the Government of Chile following the earthquake. This timely response will support the Government of Chile’s efforts to meet the needs of those affected by this disaster.”
