Statement by Minister Cannon on Passing of Grand Sheikh Mohamed Sayyid Tantawi

(No. 101 - March 11, 2010 - 3:30 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement conveying his condolences for the death of Mohamed Sayyid Tantawi, Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo and a renowned Sunni Muslim scholar.

“Sheikh Tantawi was known for his leadership, rejection of violent extremism, support for women’s rights and promotion of interfaith harmony. We mourn his passing along with the people of Egypt and Muslims in Canada and around the world. This remarkable leader will be remembered for his distinguished career as a prominent scholar of Islam and voice of moderation.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to offer my most sincere condolences to the Grand Sheikh’s family.”
