Minister Cannon Expresses Concern Over Kyrgyzstan Situation

(No. 129 - April 8, 2010 - 5 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the recent political events and violence in Kyrgyzstan:

“Canada is concerned by the continuing violence in Kyrgyzstan, and deeply regrets the loss of life and injuries to the civilian population that occurred yesterday.

“Canadian officials at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada in Ottawa, at our embassy in Kazakhstan, which is accredited to Kyrgyzstan, and in Bishkek are closely monitoring the situation.

“We call on the parties to establish a democratic government founded on internationally recognized principles of fundamental human rights, including political pluralism.”
