(No. 140 - April 22, 2010 - 1:20 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands will make an official visit to Canada from May 10 to 16, 2010. She and her husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven, will undertake programs in Calgary and Ottawa and will participate in ceremonies to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of the Second World War. Canadian forces played a leading role in the liberation.
“It is an honour for me to welcome Princess Margriet to Canada as we commemorate an event that marks not only a moment of unique importance in relations between our two countries, but also a milestone in world history,” said Minister Cannon. “The presence of Her Royal Highness in Canada 65 years after the liberation underscores the strong ties that link Canada and the Netherlands today.”
In addition to a paying a courtesy call on Minister Cannon on May 11, Princess Margriet and Mr. van Vollenhoven will call on Governor General Michaëlle Jean and visit Canadian veterans of the Netherlands liberation campaign. They will also attend events organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ottawa and Calgary involving Canadian veterans, representatives of government and private enterprise and the Dutch community in Canada.
More than 1 million Canadians are of Dutch origin and their presence in Canada and the strong people-to-people links that they have maintained with the Netherlands continue to be of major benefit to both countries.
