Canada Supports Kenya’s Constitutional Reform Efforts

(No. 248 - August 5, 2010 - 5:20 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the constitutional referendum held in Kenya:

“The Government of Canada congratulates Kenyans and the Government of Kenya for holding a peaceful constitutional referendum. This is a historic event for the country and a landmark in the reform agenda. It demonstrates the commitment of the Kenyan government to strengthening governance and accountability and to removing inequalities in Kenya.

“Canada supports the Government of Kenya in its efforts to deliver on the reforms that both parties in the coalition government agreed to in the National Accord of 2008.

“The aftermath of the 2007 election will not soon be forgotten by those affected by the violence and displacement. Going forward, Canada encourages the Government of Kenya to continue its progress on the reform agenda.”
