Canada Condemns Attack in Somalia

(No. 269 - August 24, 2010 - 6:00 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement condemning today’s terrorist attack in Mogadishu:

“Canada condemns in the strongest possible terms the terrorist attack in Mogadishu, which claimed the lives of many Somali civilians, including members of Parliament from the Transitional Federal Government. On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to express our sympathies to the friends and families of the victims.

“Al Shabaab, an Islamist militant group, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Canada is deeply concerned by the worsening security situation in Somalia and its impact on the region.

“Canada supports the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia and will continue to work with the international community to prevent and constrain terrorism and to promote human rights, democratic values and the rule of law.”
