Minister Cannon to Visit Norway, Russia and Finland

(No. 289 - September 13, 2010 - 10:50 a.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will travel to Oslo, Moscow and Helsinki from September 13 to 17 for bilateral meetings with his counterparts in each country.

In Oslo, the Minister will meet with Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, and deliver an address on Canada’s Arctic foreign policy at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs.

Canada released its Arctic foreign policy on August 20, 2010, providing the international dimension of the four pillars set out in Canada’s Northern Strategy: exercising sovereignty, promoting economic and social development, protecting the environment and improving governance. It clearly identifies sovereignty as Canada’s number one Arctic foreign policy priority.

The Minister will then continue to Moscow, where he will meet with Russia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sergei Lavrov, to discuss a range of bilateral and G-8 issues. The Minister will also meet with the Presidential Representative for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, Artur Chilingarov.

Minister Cannon will also visit Finland to follow up on the official visit of Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Stubb, to Ottawa in February and will discuss Arctic issues and Canada-EU relations. Mr. Cannon will also meet with Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi.

In Finland, the Minister will visit the Kerava bioenergy power plant.
