Paraguayan External Relations Minister Visits Ottawa
(No. 321 - October 1, 2010 - 2:45 p.m. ET) The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, and the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), met yesterday in Ottawa with Héctor Lacognata, Paraguay’s Minister of External Relations, who is visiting Canada.
“Paraguay is an important partner for Canada in the Americas,” said Minister Cannon. “We share common multilateral objectives and goals and work closely together through the UN and the Organization of American States. We had a productive discussion on several topics, including our cooperation in restoring peace and stability to Haiti in the context of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.”
During his meeting with Minister Lacognata, Minister Van Loan discussed the expanding trade relations between Canada and Paraguay.
“Commercial relations between Canada and Paraguay are growing,” said Minister Van Loan. “The inauguration of the Canada-Paraguay Chamber of Commerce in February is an indication of the potential for expansion in the coming years.”
“I was pleased to continue to discuss areas of common concern to Canada and Paraguay and to examine opportunities to work together to address ongoing security challenges,” said Minister Toews, who visited Paraguay in August 2009.
Minister of State Kent hosted a lunch in honour of Minister Lacognata. This was also a second meeting, the two having met in May during Minister of State Kent’s first official visit to Paraguay.
“During my visit to Paraguay, I had the opportunity to discuss important regional issues with Minister Lacognata,” said Minister of State Kent. “His visit was a chance to continue the conversation and further strengthen the bonds of friendship between our two countries.”
Canada and Paraguay enjoy a close relationship, and representatives of the two countries regularly meet to discuss bilateral, multilateral and regional issues.
